Manchester To Host County's Hazardous Waste Collection On Wednesday

OCEAN COUNTY - Do you have old cans of paint, deck stain, and pool chemicals laying around in your shed or garage? Waste oil, polish, cleaners and other solvents?

Now you have a chance to get rid of it safely, cleanly, and for free.

Ocean County residents are encouraged to drop off their household hazardous waste beginning October 2 at nine different sites throughout Ocean County.

One of those locations will be right here in Manchester - but make your appointment right away, because the October 4 date will come and go quickly.

"We have plenty of spots available yet for the fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection," said Freeholder James F. Lacey. "We want to encourage our residents to use this free program and get those materials that can pose a danger out of their homes."

Lacey noted that with the end of summer gardening and warm- weather boating seasons, residents should look around to discard unwanted materials from their sheds, garages and homes.

"Now is the time to get rid of pesticides, herbicides, boat paints and a lot of seasonal items that you probably won't use next year," Lacey said.

Materials accepted at the household hazardous waste collection sites are: paints, thinners, boat paints, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, aerosol cans, auto products, toilet and drain cleaners, silver polishes, oven cleaners, photographic chemicals, rug and upholstery cleaners, polishes and bleaches, waste oil and used gasoline.

Manchester will play host to the county's collection program on Wednesday, October 6, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Manchester Township Public Works Garage, Route 70.

In order to utilize the service, however, registration is required (see below).

"We can accommodate up to 420 cars at almost all of the sites," Lacey said. "We want to fill these appointments so we can make certain these items are disposed of properly and we can assure a clean and safe environment."

The county also will continue to focus on removing mercury from the waste stream by continuing to offer residents a mercury thermometer exchange program during the household hazardous waste collections.

Registration is required. To register for the Lakewood, Point Pleasant Beach or the Manchester Township drop-off sites call 732-367-0802; for the Beachwood, Dover and Lacey township sites call 732-506-5047, and for the Tuckerton, Stafford and Long Beach township sites call 609-978-0913.
