High School fourth annual Hawkapalooza lip sync contest was a memorable night, featuring 13 total performances and some exciting guest appearances. Over 700 people jammed the auditorium for this charity event sponsored the Student Government Association (SGA).
There were two teacher performances, with Miss Piro, Mr. Staples, Mrs. Staples and Ms. Adams' playful re-creation of the "Day-O" scene from the movie "Beetlejuice" taking first place. In the student category, The Salvation Army took third place, opening the show with a flawless performance of the 1980's hit "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" by Wham! The student group Omele du Fromage took second place with a creative interpretation of Pink Floyd's hit "Another Brick in the Wall." First place went to The Nuggets, in their third Hawkapalooza appearance, who impressed everyone with a performance to a mix of several songs. The audience was treated to a special surprise performance by The Collegiate Lettermen, consisting of Andrew Grando, Bob Knapp, Nick Ott, Kevin Lally, Tim Weigand, George Mack and Matt Tilton, all 2006 MTHS alumni who came back for an encore. In fact, Grando, Knapp and Weigand traveled over 100 miles on December 8 to return to MTHS for the surprise appearance, unbeknownst by their families, demonstrating that Hawk spirit is proud and true.
SGA raised over $5,100 to benefit both "Going to Bat for Brian Malast" and "The Little Rock Foundation," SGA's state charity for 2006 and 2007. George Malast made a presentation about "Going to Bat for Brian," and gave an update about Brian's improvement. Also, Debbie Fiorentino gave an informational presentation explaining the goals of "The Little Rock Foundation," which is a non-profit organization assisting children who are visually impaired (www.tlrf. org). Perhaps one of the most memorable parts of the evening was a performance by 10-year old Rocco Fiorentino, who is blind and the son of Ms. Fiorentino. Rocco earned a standing ovation at the conclusion of his singing and keyboard performance of three songs, including "Margaritaville." Rocco truly inspired everyone in the audience. At the end of the evening, many students and adults obtained autographs from Rutgers Scarlet Knight football players Kevin Malast (MTHS class of 2005), Brian Leonard and Jeremy Cisto, who also made a surprise appearance at Hawkapalooza.
"The MTHS SGA would like to thank everyone who supported Hawkapalooza 2006, especially those who performed, served as judges, volunteered, donated door prizes or purchased
door prize/admission tickets,"
said SGA Advisor Jill Ocone. "Hawkapalooza 2006 could not
have been as memorable or successful without your support."
