MTHS students Christopher Lawrence and Erika Quinde were honored as the winners of a Black History Month essay contest sponsored jointly by the school and the Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station. MANCHESTER- In a joint venture with Navy Lakehurst, Manchester Township High School (MTHS) students participated in an essay contest in celebration of Black History Month.

Christopher Lawrence, a junior, was the winner and the runner-up was sophomore Erika Quinde.

All students at the high school participated in the contest, writing essays based on a speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to a group of students

in Philadelphia in 1967. The

speech focused on making a "blueprint for life" and challenged

teenagers to plan for their future by making decisions today regarding their goals, aspirations and dreams.

Lawrence and Quinde, along with their parents and Principal David Walling, were honored at a special luncheon at the base. Both students received a savings bond and a book.
