Lakehurst Mayor Arrested For DWI And Possession Of Marijuana
By Keith Hagarty

Lakehurst Mayor Stephen Childers was arrested last week with charges including possession of marijuana and DWI.

On Wednesday, August 1, at approximately 11:47 p.m., according to police reports from the Manchester Township Police Department, an officer was driving behind a pickup truck eastbound on Route 70. The officer had the occasion to detect an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle as it slowed in traffic.

The officer observed the driver of the vehicle toss an object out of the truck window. The officer then pulled the vehicle over in the area of Beckerville Road and Route 70 in Manchester Township. The driver, and lone occupant of the suspect vehicle, was then identified as 50-year-old Lakehurst Borough Mayor and resident Stephen Childers.

As a result of the investigation, Childers was found in possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, and was determined to be under the influence of the same. Childers was charged with throwing debris from a motor vehicle, reckless driving, possession of under 50 grams of a controlled substance and driving under the influence.

Childers was released on his own recognizance pending municipal court.

Phone calls made to Childers and Lakehurst Township Administrator Norbert B. MacLean seeking comments on the mayor's arrest and the possibility of any subsequent disciplinary measures were not returned as of press time.
