Breast Cancer Awareness, Research Target Of Events

OCEAN COUNTY - On October 21, a little walking could go a long way.

On October 21, Ocean County employees - along with

hundreds of other residents,

businesses and civic groups - will participate in the annual

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk along the Point Pleasant Beach Boardwalk.

The public is encouraged to join the walk and raise money for breast cancer research, education and patient services programs, Freeholder Gerry P. Little said.

"Our employees raise about $5,000 every year at the walk-athon," he said. "I invite everyone to join with us for a wonderful cause and a wonderful autumn day at the Jersey Shore."

Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk kicks off at 10 a.m. at Arnold and Ocean avenues.

But there's more taking place a few days before. You'll just have to dress appropriately.

Picking out clothes to wear on October 17 won't be difficult as long as they're pink.

The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders is joining with health professionals to mark Pretty In Pink Day, and draw attention to the fight against breast cancer.

This year, a Pretty In Pink Day breast health program will be held at the Southern Education Center of Ocean County College in Stafford Township.

"We will be focusing on the importance of mammography," said Little, liaison to the Ocean County Health Department. "Several doctors will discuss the different types of mammography available as well as the latest breast cancer treatments."

Little, whose late mother and two aunts suffered from breast cancer, said early detection is an important key in fighting the disease.

"We ask everyone to wear pink, not only to remember those who battled breast cancer, but as a reminder to women that a mammography can save their lives," he said.

Books on breast cancer will also be available and a breast cancer survivor will talk about the impact the disease had on her family.

For more information or to register for the program, please call SOCH Connect at 609-978-3400.
