| Manchester Township Director of Public Works and Utilities, Stephen Stanziano was the recipient of this year's Superintendent Excellence Award at a luncheon in his honor during the 2007 New Jersey State League of Municipalities Annual Conference held last month in Atlantic City.
The award was presented to him by the State Awards Committee for The Public Works Association of New Jersey on November 15.
Stanziano was recognized for his numerous accomplishments and dedication throughout his 25 years of service in public works. He has spent the last 12 years working for Manchester Township and the prior 12 in Jersey City.
Co-worker and Supervisor of Engineering Gary Sylvester nominated Stanziano for the award.
"Stephen has demonstrated exceptional leadership for the past 12 years," Sylvester said. "Starting his 25th year (of public service), he has implemented positive changes here in Manchester. His most notable accomplishment came on the heels of two memorial park dedications, the Tuskegee Airmen and POW/MIA. These park dedications were inaugurated with extensive ceremonies and a strong public turnout that created an astounding social poise for the community."
Stanziano was both shocked and touched when he was notified of his nomination.
"I had no idea I was nominated until a week before," Stanziano said. "When I found out I was getting the award, I took four members of my staff with me to the luncheon in Atlantic City. It was so kind of Gary to nominate me. He was the first person I hired when I started here in Manchester and he's been with me every step of the way. He's as loyal and as gifted as they come."
The New Jersey State League of Municipalities is a voluntary association created to help communities improve self-government by providing information and pooling resources. It has been serving local officials since 1915 throughout New Jersey and is authorized by state statute. The association holds a conference each year in Atlantic City so that members can gather and exchange information through seminars, training sessions and conferences. Awards are presented for outstanding performance in numerous fields.
