Showing Mom You Love Her Is More Than Just One Day
By Keith Hagarty

Flowers for mom? That's just the start of honoring what all mothers have to offer on Mother's Day.
It's that time of the year when moms across America, the world and even right here in our own backyard gear up for that one special day where they alone are the pampered, honored star: Mother's Day.

As May 11 approaches, mother of four, Claire Moyer, already senses something's brewing in her household.

"I hear them already talking code around the house," she said of her kids. "I always know they're up to something when suddenly nobody's talking about anything. Usually I can't get them to shut about anything," she said. "I wish I could get them to treat every day like Mother's Day. That would be the greatest gift of all!"

Not wanting to play favorites, Moyers would not offer a personal favorite all-time Mother's Day gift for herself; however, she does have a fantasy wish list at the ready.

"Tickets to Hawaii would be my ultimate dream. Just me, the sun, the sand, the beaches- just gorgeous," she said. "I went 25 years ago as a teenager and I've been dying to go back ever since. That would be the best gift ever for me- and I guess the kids and my husband can come too if they want to," she laughed.

Although she's not a mother yet, Jennifer Hamlin is expecting her first child in September.

"I'm going to miss this one for me, but my mom already got her gift early when I told her I was going to have a baby," said Hamlin. "But she always wants the same thing: pink Gerber daisies."

Thinking about what it will be like for her this time next year, Hamlin beamed.

"Are you kidding me? That's all I think about every time I go into a store and see all their Mother's Day cards and signs and everything," she said. "I'm so excited, you have no idea. Can babies shop when they're less than 1 year old?"

With two children, 12 and 8, Brenda Eckles said it's the one day she probably looks forward to the most all year long.

"We always have a great time, and they try their best, even if they're sometimes way off the mark," she said laughing. "But last year was really special. They decided to avoid all the crowds, and they made my favorite dinner- Chicken Parmigiana. It was a complete mess! My husband helped them too, so maybe that's why it was such a mess."

Eckles recalled her own adventures when she was a kid trying to make her mother happy.

"I remember one time me and my brothers had this great idea of playing her favorite album for her so she could wake up to it and come down and open her presents," she said. "Unfortunately, when you're a kid, blasting music at anytime of the day is perfectly fine, but my mother definitely didn't see it that way. She came downstairs, shut it off, didn't say a word and walked right back upstairs."

But all wasn't lost on that day either, according to Eckles.

"She came back down about 20 minutes later," she said. "She got her coffee and she was fine, and so were we … luckily my kids haven't tried that one yet."

The day to celebrate your mom - or to be celebrated yourself - is Sunday, May 11.
