Inter-Village Emergency Management Council Provides Fire Safety Tips
WHITING - The Inter-Village Emergency Management Council has provided the following firesafety tips.
Don't leave food cooking on the stove top unattended for long. The same thing goes for items baking in the oven. Individuals who feel sleepy or drowsy from medication or alcohol should put off cooking to another day.
Pot holders, food packaging, cookbooks and other combustibles should be kept off your stove top. Because built-up grease can easily catch fire, wipe up spills and keep your oven clean. Curtains, dish towels and anything that burns needs to be kept clear of your stove. Remember to turn pot handles in so you can't bump them.
Open micro-waved food slowly and let it cool before eating. Never use a wet oven mitt. A hot pan can turn dampness into scalding steam.
Loose clothing can catch fire. Either wear tight fitting clothes or roll up your sleeves.
Declare a three-foot "kid-free zone" around the stove and keep children and pets away from the stove while you cook.
To fight a grease fire: If a pan catches fire, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the fire. Leave the pan covered until it's completely cool. Don't use a fireextinguisher or throw water on the fire. This can splatter burning grease and spread the fire. Turn off the burner.
To fight an oven fire: Turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.
To fight a microwave fire: Keep the door closed and unplug the microwave. Have the oven serviced before you use it again.
Report all fires to the firedepartment even if you think you've put them out.
