Prepare For An Emergency With A Disaster Supply Kit
WHITING - Inter-Village Emergency Management Council is providing Red Cross guidelines on being prepared in an emergency with a disaster supply kit.
In the disaster supply kit, there are some basics you should try to stock: water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding.
Water should be one gallon per day per person, two quarts for drinking and two quarts for sanitation. Keep a three day supply of water for each person in your household. Change every six to nine months.
Food should be a three day supply of nonperishable food, not needing refrigeration, preparation or cooking, using little or no water and a manual can opener. Should be compact and lightweight.
First aid supplies including band aids, sterile gauze pads and roller bandages, hypoallergenic adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, petroleum jelly, scissors, tweezers, thermometer, safety pins, waterless handsoap, latex or vinyl gloves and moistened towelettes.
You should also have tools, sanitation supplies and special personal items such as prescriptions, medications, eyeglasses, etc.
Many of these things you may already have in your home. Just know where they are.
