Manchester Library Receives Grant
MANCHESTER - The Manchester branch of the Ocean County Library has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the "American Library Association and Nextbook," a periodical pertaining to Jewish culture, to host a five-part book discussion series. The series is entitled "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature - Identity and Imagination," the program is unique because it is led by a scholar and includes books that have a common theme.
This is the second time that the Manchester Library has received the grant. Dr. Ali Botein- Furrevig, an adjunct assistant professor of English and literature at Ocean County College, will return to lead the series.
"We are so pleased that we have been chosen to host this program again," said Wendi Smolowitz, senior librarian. "Our first session, which was held last fall, was very popular. The participants enjoyed having the opportunity to exchange their thoughts and ideas with a college professor."
The new series, whose theme is "A Mind of Her Own: Fathers and Daughters in a Changing World," will be held on Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. The dates will be September 4 and 25, October 23, November 13 and December 4. Sholem Aleichem's Tevye the Dairyman will be the subject of the first discussion. The other titles included in the series are Anzia Yezierska's "Bread Givers," Johanna Kaplan's "O My America," Philip Roth's "American Pastoral" and Myla Goldberg's "Bee Season."
Registration will begin on August 1 and will be limited to 25 people. Because the event is designed to be a series, priority will be given to those who can attend all five sessions. To register, please call the Manchester Library at 732-657-7600 or go to www.theoceancountylibrary. org. For additional information, call Wendi at 732-657-7600 extension 4113.
