Editorial Merry Christmas And Happy Holidays
It happens every year. They're gone before they really even began.
The Christmas season is fast coming to a close. As this is being written, there are mere days left before the holiday is upon us. It is the culmination of weeks of shopping; of an entire season of major holidays; of frantic days and crowded stores; of singing children and bright holiday displays; of the never-ending, unceasing spectacle that is this wonderful, crass, warm, commercial, loving and contradictory season.
Some of us will be glad it is over. And others will pine for its return as soon as possible.
No matter which side of the fence you fall on, it is impossible to ignore Christmas, the biggest holiday of the year.
Oh, some people try to ignore it, sulking like Grinches come to life, scowling at holiday cheer, so much so (and with such predictable regularity) that their sour looks have almost become a tradition in and of themselves.
And still others try to ignore Christmas on behalf of others, "protecting" children from the great scourge that is the holiday, urging schools to stop singing Christmas carols and gleefully cheering as the American Civil Liberties Union sues another public Christmas display out of existence. We feed these selfish people each year with the attention we give them, and sadly, we dignify their childish protests by shamefully giving in to their demands and uttering politically correct greetings each year, careful not to offend with the dread word "Christmas."
With them in mind, we offer a Merry Christmas to everybody out there. Even those who want the phrase removed from the lexicon. In fact, to them especially we offer a warm Merry Christmas.
To all of you we extend a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, a blessed Kwanzaa or whatever else is the center of your December celebration. We wish it by name. With specificity. And from our hearts.
As the snow falls this holiday season; as parents bask in the glow of their children's smiles; as shoppers scramble for last minute gifts; as we look forward to a new year, the entire staff of The Manchester Times and Micromedia Publications, Inc. wishes you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a great New Year.
